This is the story of how One Barnsley kick-started the process of involving local people in looking at how to get rural issues discussed, taken seriously and included.
The first two stories in a series from the 'Connecting Communities' areas within Yorkshire and the Humber have now been published.
Connecting Communities is a programme of activity designed to promote cohesion and specifically, to address the marginalisation felt amongst some sections of the community in deprived neighbourhoods.
The case studies presented in this publication illustrate two very different approaches to meeting neighbourhood aspirations.
Unifying Threads brings women in Barnsley together to create an artwork showing that Barnsley has many layers and women with many backgrounds. From its heavy industrial past with glassworks and mining to providing refuge to new migrants, this short version of the film celebrates Barnsley's past and present. Full film available free of charge from Northern Refugee Centre.
A range of free events are taking place from 15th to 29th October in South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire has adopted a unique partnership approach to developing community engagement ‘improvement programmes’ which explore the menu of
options identified by in the CLG Empowerment White Paper and ‘Communities in Control’ – the empowerment White Paper.
One in a series of studies illustrating the contribution that community development can make to community empowerment.
This research is set within the policy context of recognition of the value and contribution made by faith groups to the social capital or the country and encourages greater involvement of local people and communities in decision making.
