YHEP’s Contributions to a Bigger Civil Society In this edition of Update, we provide a snapshot of just some of the activities that have taken place over the last year. The middle pages are a ‘pull-out’ summary of a briefing paper sent to the coalition government and their advisors to illustrate some of the marvellous social activism supported and delivered here in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire and the Humber  - shifting power to communities
 This briefing paper seeks to provide a record of  'what we know' works at community level, and 'how we know it' through a range of illustrated activities in Yorkshire & Humber.

It has been sent to government ministers and civil servants as a contribution to the Big Society discussions and includes an invitation to come and see some of this activity in action.

CAA and the VCS: Summary of key points from 4 sub-regional workshops

Four sub-regional workshops were held earlier this year exploring the results of the Comprehensive Area Assessments (CAA) on empowerment and engagement focusing on the involvement of the voluntary and community sectors. A brief summary of the key points that were raised is now available

A report by 'Laying the Foundations' - residents of Kendray estate in Barnsley who carried out a study to investigate the quality of resident engagement in Kendray's Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder by addressing the question: 'What have we learned about empowerment practice and how it could be improved?'

NEA Framework for an ideal empowering authority

This framework is based on the work of the Network of Empowering Authorities (NEA) initially at an event in October 2008.

The Framework provides a benchmark for an ideal authority, something to aspire to. It consists of 5 inter-linked pillars, and 5 high-level success factors, that between them describe a high performing empowering authority
